Education globalization improves communication between different education systems and allocation of educational resources. The ‘Interest education’ is one of the easiest aspects that accepted by most countries and regions. Simultaneously, it also supports development in poverty regions such as reducing inequality, establishing health awareness, keeping regional peace and so forth, especially sports without equipment. People can not only obtain knowledge and skills but also understand and contribute to culture, development goals and ethics. Taekwondo as one of the most famous sports in the world has a lot of members who have different age, gender, career and live in different environment and societies. At the same time, Taekwondo owns two organizations (ITF & WT) in the world which are strong partnership for achievement of sustainable development goals. Therefore, Taekwondo as one example of ‘interest education’ can not only improve individual development but also provide opportunity to people as a bridge to communication and countries as a platform for development.

And I talk with Andrew Boyle who give me many ideas how to embed more different development aspects into interest education, and Mayura Ashok who researched D- Force about drug for young people. I think our project can combine as a part of interest education because interest education not only means interest class but also educate people through interaction and games. In conclusion, I believe everything can link to education, and the ‘interest education’ may become one of the most effective approaches to improve development of quality education for sustainable development.

Blog 2 – Commodification of education

I have work in ITF (CHINA) Beijing branch for two months, and I am very happy to work in Phoenix Martial Arts Association (club) in Beijing. I obtained the greatest supports from Secretary-General, Mr. Han. My placement role has changed from an instructor to Manager, Chief Coach and decision maker for some activities because I presented many creative ideas in training and promotion. I have to say this is a significant opportunity for me to understand Taekwondo industry and development of ‘Interest education’. And I discovered an important problem under ‘Interest Education’ environment in China that children usually cannot select their interest independently. So, Mr. Han makes much account of my research project and provide me much introduction of current situations, policy and parents’ thinking.

I found most of ‘interest education’ institutes do not really respect children’s interest. They usually induce parents think their ‘interest’ is useful for children in the future so that parents may apply this one and pay money because education has been commercial for independent institutes. And ‘interest education’ in school (Free) has two main parts, one is elective course for student as an assessment relating to their pass exam. The other is interest activities that students select their favorite activities to enrich their lives. However, some parents still ‘HELP’ their children select interest because they think their selections are correct and good for their children. In China, the costs of children are the biggest price in a family. We also have some member clubs that only want to make money rather than educate children and young people seriously. I talked with Mr. Han, he pointed out most clubs did not follow the training objective and plan of ITF (CHINA) causing their students are easy to pass the grading because they can make more money. We cannot change this tendency because Taekwondo industry has changed to commodification in most social clubs of the world that likes a business, but we can practice our concepts and follow plan and training objective of ITF (CHINA) in our club. Therefore, we practice in Phoenix Martial Arts Association in Beijing to complete grading requirement, reinforce awareness education combining with our

training outline, reinforce eastern etiquette education and culture permeation etc. From reciting to understanding, from theory to practice. I wrote all detail in our private training outline, then we need to keep doing it and observe trainee and parents’ responses. If parents can understand our training, we will continue this training model.

For my international development research project, I will work in the International Taekwondo (China) Federation Beijing branch as an instructor to teach and promote Taekwondo and explore its relationship with ‘interest education’ and development. I believe education is the most important element of personal development because every domain in contemporary world needs accumulated knowledge, skills, values, attitudes and cultural awareness to achieve sustainable development.

‘Interest education’, in China includes both elective subjects and extra-curricular activities, can effectively complement basic education. Despite its importance, it has only been given attention from a few professional organizations in developed or developing countries. Most NGOs, civil society organizations and governments usually pay more attention in building basic education system, rather than promoting basic ‘interest education’.

I recognize the importance of ‘interest education’ for the education system. For example, sports as a part of ‘interest education’ can support children not only learn basic safety, health awareness and spirit building but also enhance physical fitness and reduce disease through training.

Even though my placement organization is a non-for-profit organization, it is still affected by different politics, the economy and culture, and can contribute to the sustainable development goals. So, the aim of my project, in the long-range, is to contribute to promoting the role of ‘interest education’, in particular sports, such as Taekwondo, in achieving the sustainable development goals. In the medium-term, the aim is to promote the learning of Taekwondo in schools and local communities. In the short-term, it aims to develop the interest and skills of current children and young people in Taekwondo for personal, moral and spiritual development.
